How much does a DICOM CD publishing setup actually cost?

A DICOM CD publishing workflow costs significantly more than the hardware price tag: equipment alone runs 5,000–20,000, blank discs add up at roughly 1 each, and staff spend 10–20 minutes per study on burning, labelling, logging, and handing over the disc.

CD/DVD Publisher Hardware
5,000 – 20,000
one-time equipment cost
Blank Disc Consumables
~1 per disc
plus ink, labels, sleeves
Staff Time
10–20 min per study

Equipment Maintenance
Ongoing
servicing, replacement parts
Physical Media Tracking

Modern computers no longer include CD drives. When a patient or referring physician receives a DICOM CD today, they often cannot open it without purchasing an external drive and installing compatible viewer software. PostDICOM share links open in any browser — nothing to buy, nothing to install.

How does PostDICOM replace a DICOM CD publisher in practice?

Three steps replace the entire CD workflow — upload the study, generate a share link, and the recipient opens it in any browser. No hardware, no burning, no disc to hand over.

01

How do DICOM studies get into PostDICOM?

Upload DICOM studies directly from your browser, or connect your imaging devices to auto-send via the Medical Device Communicator — studies are available in the cloud within minutes of acquisition, with no manual transfer step.

02

How do you send a study to a patient or referring physician?

Select the study, set a password and an optional expiry date, and PostDICOM generates a unique share link instantly. Send it by email, or print the link with its QR code and hand it to the patient — exactly as you would a CD.

03

What does the recipient need to open the study?

Nothing beyond a browser: the recipient clicks the link, enters the password, and the PostDICOM viewer opens on compatible PCs, Macs, and tablets. No CD drive. No additional DICOM software. No account required.

What features replace a DICOM CD for sharing medical images?

PostDICOM replaces every function of a CD: secure share links deliver the study, QR print handover replicates the physical hand-off, clinical document attachment replaces the printed report, and access controls replace the physical disc as the security mechanism.

How are DICOM studies shared securely without a CD?

PostDICOM generates a password-protected share link for any study in seconds — set an expiry date and choose whether the recipient can download the files. The link works in any browser with no CD drive and no additional software needed.

Can share links be protected beyond a password?

Yes — optionally enable Two-Factor Authentication on any share link. After entering the password, the recipient receives a 6-digit one-time code to their email before the study opens, adding a second layer of access control.

Does the recipient need to install anything to view the study?

No — recipients open studies in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android with no CD drive, no DICOM viewer software, and no installation. The viewer runs entirely in the browser.

Can you include the radiology report alongside the DICOM images?

Yes — attach PDF reports, JPEG images, MP4 videos, and BMP files alongside DICOM studies, all accessible through the same share link. Everything the recipient needs is in one place.

Can patients still receive something physical to take away?

Yes — generate a printable page containing the share URL, access password, and QR code, then print it and hand it to the patient at their appointment with no email address needed, just like handing over a CD envelope.

Can link generation be automated from a RIS or patient management system?

Yes — the PostDICOM JavaScript API generates share links automatically from your RIS or patient management system, eliminating manual steps entirely for high-volume environments.

What is it like for a patient to receive a PostDICOM link versus a DICOM CD?

A PostDICOM link opens in any browser on compatible PCs, Macs, and tablets with a single click — no CD drive, no viewer software, and no setup. A DICOM CD requires a physical disc, a compatible drive, and installed software before the patient can view a single image.

Receiving a DICOM CD
Patient must physically carry the disc to every appointment
Needs a computer with a CD drive — rare on modern laptops
Must find and install compatible DICOM viewer software
If the disc is scratched or lost, the study is gone
Cannot view images on a phone or tablet
Cannot access the study from home or another clinic
No way to know if the study was ever successfully opened
Sharing with a second specialist means burning another disc
Study becomes inaccessible once the disc fails
Receiving a PostDICOM Link
Click the link from compatible PCs, Macs, or tablets.
No CD drive required
No additional software to install — opens in the browser
Link is permanent and accessible from anywhere
View on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, or Linux
Access from home, another clinic, or while travelling
Sender can see how many times the link was accessed
Forward the same link to any number of specialists
Study remains accessible until the expiry date you set

Common questions

What is PostDICOM as a DICOM CD publisher alternative?

Instead of burning a DICOM study to a CD and handing it to the patient, PostDICOM lets you generate a secure, password-protected share link in seconds. The recipient clicks the link, enters the password, and the PostDICOM viewer opens in their browser — on compatible PCs, Macs, and tablets, with no additional software to install. The result is identical to a CD handover, without the equipment, consumables, or physical media.

How much does a CD/DVD publishing setup actually cost?

An entry-level DICOM CD/DVD publisher costs between 5,000 and 20,000 in hardware. Blank discs cost approximately 1 each, plus labels, sleeves, and ink. Staff spend 10–20 minutes per study on burning, labelling, logging, and handing over the disc. Equipment requires ongoing maintenance and eventual replacement. PostDICOM eliminates all of these costs for a fixed monthly subscription.

What if the patient's computer doesn't have a CD drive?

Most modern laptops and computers no longer include a CD or DVD drive. When a patient receives a DICOM CD, they often cannot open it without purchasing an external drive and installing compatible viewer software. With PostDICOM, the share link opens the viewer directly in any browser — no drive, no additional software, no setup required.

Can I still give the patient something physical to take away?

Yes. PostDICOM lets you generate a printable page containing the share URL, the access password, and a QR code. Print it and hand it to the patient at their appointment — the experience is the same as handing over a CD envelope, but the patient simply scans the QR code or types the URL to open their images.

How secure is the share link compared to a DICOM CD?

A DICOM CD is an unencrypted physical disc that can be lost, stolen, or read by anyone with a compatible drive. PostDICOM share links are HTTPS-only, password-protected, and can optionally require Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) — sending a 6-digit code to the recipient's email before the study opens. You can also set an expiry date after which the link stops working.

Can I control whether the recipient downloads the DICOM files?

Yes. When creating a share link, you can choose whether the recipient is allowed to download the DICOM files to their computer. If download is disabled, they can view and interact with the study in the browser but cannot save the files locally.

How does PostDICOM compare to a CD for referring physicians?

A referring physician who receives a DICOM CD needs a computer with a CD drive and compatible viewer software installed. With PostDICOM, you send a share link by email. The physician clicks the link, enters the password, and the study opens in their browser immediately — no physical delivery wait, no additional software dependency.

Can imaging devices send studies to PostDICOM automatically?

Yes. The Medical Device Communicator connects your CT, MRI, X-ray, and other DICOM-capable devices to your PostDICOM account. Studies are sent automatically after acquisition, without any manual upload step. Share links can then be generated immediately or programmatically via the API.

Can I attach the radiology report alongside the images?

Yes. PostDICOM stores and shares non-DICOM clinical files — PDF reports, JPEG and BMP images, MP4 videos — alongside DICOM studies. All files are accessible through the same share link, giving the recipient a complete clinical package equivalent to a CD with a printed report.

Where is the imaging data stored?

When you create your PostDICOM account, you select your primary storage location from 12 independent Microsoft Azure regions: EU (Germany (Frankfurt), France (Paris)), USA (East, West, South Central), UK (London), Switzerland (Zurich), Canada (Montreal), Asia-Pacific (Singapore, Australia (Sydney), India (Pune)), and South America (Brazil(São Paulo)). Your data is hosted within your selected jurisdiction to help you meet local data residency requirements and comply with regional healthcare privacy laws (such as GDPR or HIPAA).

What happens to the data if I cancel my subscription?

Before cancelling, download all studies and documents you wish to retain. When your subscription ends, all patient data — DICOM studies, images, and reports — is permanently deleted from our systems. Your account record is retained for accounting purposes only.

Is PostDICOM suitable for high-volume CD publishing replacement?

Yes. PostDICOM's Ultimate plan includes a REST API and FHIR integrations that allow you to generate share links programmatically from your RIS or patient management system. For very large networks, an enterprise plan is available with custom storage and user counts.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. All plans include a 7-day free trial with full access to your selected plan's features. We use Stripe 3D Secure authentication at sign-up to verify your card — this is a 0 authorisation. You are not charged until your 7-day trial expires, and your subscription auto-renews unless cancelled. You can easily cancel any time before the trial ends.
