Common questions

Do I need to install any software to use PostDICOM?

The zero-footprint Advanced HTML5 Viewer and most PostDICOM features run entirely in modern web browsers — no installation required. To automatically send studies from traditional imaging devices such as CT, MRI, or X-ray machines, you install the Medical Device Communicator on a local workstation at your site. This is a lightweight application, and setup typically takes under an hour.

What types of files can I store in PostDICOM?

PostDICOM supports both DICOM and non-DICOM files. Supported formats include DICOM studies from all standard modalities (CT, MRI, X-ray, Ultrasound, PET). To provide a complete clinical overview, you can also store and attach clinical reports, patient photos, and MP4 surgical videos, JPEG, PNG, and PDF formats. All files are stored securely in your selected Azure region.

Can I connect PostDICOM to my existing PACS or modalities?

Yes, absolutely. We support both traditional and modern connectivity standards to integrate seamlessly with your current setup:

  • Direct DICOMweb Integration: For modern systems, PostDICOM natively supports DICOMweb (STOW-RS, QIDO-RS, WADO-RS). This allows your compatible modalities or existing PACS to communicate directly with our Cloud PACS without requiring any additional local software.
  • Medical Device Communicator: For traditional modalities and on-premise PACS that rely on standard DICOM protocols (such as C-STORE), our Medical Device Communicator acts as a secure bridge, safely routing your imaging studies directly to the cloud.

Where is my data stored? Can I choose the region?

Yes. When you create your PostDICOM account, you select your primary storage location from 12 independent Microsoft Azure regions: EU (Frankfurt, Paris), USA (East, West, South Central), UK (London), Switzerland (Zurich), Canada (Montreal), Asia-Pacific (Singapore, Sydney, Pune), and South America (São Paulo). Your data is hosted within your selected jurisdiction to help you meet local data residency requirements and comply with regional healthcare privacy laws (such as GDPR or HIPAA).

Is PostDICOM suitable for a multi-site clinic or hospital network?

Yes, absolutely. Our Cloud PACS architecture is designed specifically to unify workflows across multiple locations. By deploying a Medical Device Communicator at each physical site, all imaging data routes securely into one centralized cloud account, giving you a complete overview of your entire network.
For larger organizations, we offer Location Add-ons that unlock critical enterprise features:

  • Automated Data Organization: Incoming studies are automatically tagged by their origin facility, allowing your team to instantly filter and search by specific clinics.
  • Granular Access Control: Administrators can strictly control user permissions, ensuring staff only have access to patient data from their assigned locations, maintaining strict privacy and HIPAA/GDPR compliance.

What happens during the 7-day free trial?

You receive full, unrestricted access to all features included in your selected plan so you can test the platform with your own data. To set up your account, we perform a secure 0 authorization via Stripe 3D Secure to verify your card, but you are not charged during the trial. You can easily cancel from your dashboard at any time before the 7 days expire without being billed. If you do not cancel, your trial will automatically convert into your chosen paid subscription at the end of the 7 days to ensure uninterrupted service.

What is the difference between CapEx and OpEx for a Cloud PACS?

Traditional on-premise PACS require significant Capital Expenditure (CapEx) — server hardware, cooling infrastructure, software licenses, and dedicated IT staff. PostDICOM operates on an Operational Expenditure (OpEx) model: a predictable monthly or annual subscription that includes storage, viewer access, security updates, and maintenance. This eliminates large upfront costs and converts imaging infrastructure into a manageable, scalable operating expense.

Can I use PostDICOM for tumor boards and medical teaching?

Yes. Live Presenter Mode (available on Elite and Ultimate plans) allows physicians to draw dynamic annotations directly on DICOM slices during tumor board meetings, remote consultations, or medical classes. Annotations fade automatically, functioning as a digital laser pointer without cluttering the image. PostDICOM also offers a dedicated Medical Image Teaching product for creating structured teaching libraries and courses.

Should our clinic maintain a local backup of imaging data?

Yes, we strongly recommend it. PostDICOM utilizes enterprise-grade Microsoft Azure infrastructure, which maintains multiple redundant copies of your files within your selected region for platform reliability. While this protects against hardware failures, it is not a point-in-time backup service. If a user permanently deletes data from your account, it is immediately removed from the servers and cannot be recovered. To comply with healthcare data retention best practices, you should always maintain an independent, secondary archive of your patient data.

What is a Cloud PACS?

A Cloud PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is a modern medical imaging platform where the storage, processing, and distribution of DICOM images are securely hosted on remote cloud servers rather than on-premise hardware. Instead of purchasing and maintaining expensive local servers, clinics and hospitals subscribe to a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution. The cloud platform securely stores all patient imaging data, provides a zero-footprint diagnostic viewer, and manages seamless sharing and routing — all accessible directly through modern web browsers.

How does Cloud PACS differ from on-premise PACS?

On-premise PACS requires physical server hardware, dedicated IT staff, and significant upfront capital investment. Software updates, storage expansions, and disaster recovery are the responsibility of the clinic. Cloud PACS like PostDICOM eliminates the hardware entirely — PostDICOM manages infrastructure, security, and updates. Costs shift from capital expenditure (CapEx) to a predictable subscription (OpEx), and the system is securely accessible through modern web browsers without requiring a complex VPN or local network connection.

What imaging modalities does PostDICOM support?

PostDICOM supports DICOM studies from all standard imaging modalities including CT, MRI, X-ray (CR/DR), Ultrasound, PET, PET-CT, Mammography, Nuclear Medicine, and Fluoroscopy. To provide a complete clinical overview, PostDICOM also allows you to store and view non-DICOM files alongside the patient's imaging studies, such as clinical reports, patient photos, and MP4 surgical videos, JPEG, PNG, and PDF formats.

What does zero-footprint DICOM viewer mean?

A zero-footprint DICOM viewer runs entirely in a standard web browser with no additional software installation, plugins, or local storage required. PostDICOM's Advanced HTML5 Viewer is zero-footprint — a radiologist, referring physician, or patient can safely open a DICOM study on compatible PCs, Macs, and tablets by visiting a secure link. This makes it highly accessible while maintaining strict security and regulatory compliance.

Can radiologists access DICOM images remotely?

Yes. PostDICOM is designed specifically for secure remote access. Using our zero-footprint Advanced HTML5 Viewer, radiologists can open and review studies directly from modern web browsers — no complex VPNs, no local software installations, and no dependency on an internal hospital network. This architecture seamlessly supports teleradiology workflows, on-call remote reporting, and collaborative multi-site reading environments.

How much does a Cloud PACS cost?

PostDICOM offers transparent, scalable pricing to fit clinics and hospital networks of all sizes. You can choose flexible month-to-month billing or an annual subscription, which saves you up to the equivalent of 2 months of service.

  • Starter: 89/mo (or 79/mo billed annually) – Includes the Advanced HTML5 Viewer and baseline storage for smaller practices.
  • Professional: 179/mo (or 149/mo billed annually) – Adds multi-site automated device routing via Medical Device Communicator.
  • Elite: 359/mo (or 299/mo billed annually) – Expanded storage, additional users, and advanced workflow features.
  • Ultimate: 599/mo (or 499/mo billed annually) – Maximum capacity and features for high-volume diagnostic centers.
  • Enterprise: Custom pricing tailored for large hospital networks with bespoke architectural requirements.
